fun micro adventures

Are you’re craving adventure, but don’t feel like you have enough time in your busy life, then why not give these fun micro adventure ideas a go? A micro adventure is a small, manageable adventure that can be done in a short amount of time and close to home, making it easy to fit in after work, or into a weekend. Here are five fun micro adventure ideas to get you started

An evening camp out

Camping doesn’t need to take up the entire weekend. How about finding a beautiful campsite close to home, or maybe even your own back garden!

You can build a fire pit and make s’mores. This is a great way to disconnect from technology and recharge your batteries. Plus, it’s a perfect activity for families with young children who may not be ready for a longer camping trip.

I once gave this a go by driving out to a quiet farm campsite just outside of the city, and it transformed my Friday night!

There is nothing quite like waking up to bird song in nature, no matter where you are!

SUNRISE OR SUNSET HIKE

Go for a sunrise hike – There’s something special about being the first person to reach the top of a mountain or hill and watching the sun rise over the horizon. Plan an early morning hike and watch as the world comes to life around you. Be sure to bring a thermos of hot coffee or tea to enjoy at the summit. Not only will this micro adventure give you a sense of accomplishment, but it will also provide beautiful views and photo opportunities.

Sunset hikes along the city river is one of my favourite ways to spend evenings after work when the days grow longer.

EXPLORE A NEW AREA BY BIKE OR SCOOTER

Explore a new area or city by bike – Street rental bikes and scooters are everywhere these days, and give you the perfect opportunity to make exploring a little more adventurous. This allows you to cover more ground than walking while still allowing you to fully experience your surroundings. Make a loose plan of places you want to see, but allow yourself the freedom to veer off course and discover hidden gems along the way. Don’t forget to pack snacks and water to keep your energy levels up.

I once tried this in Bristol to avoid walking miles up and down hills. I tried out the E-scooters for the first time. After the first couple dodgy scooters I found a good one, and I zipped around the entire city in a few hours, it was so fun!

WILD SWIMMING

Take a wild swimming dip – Swimming in natural bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and oceans can be incredibly refreshing and invigorating. Do some research to find a safe spot near you where wild swimming is allowed. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it. Remember to always prioritise safety and follow any local rules or guidelines. Wild swimming can be a great way to cool off during hot summer months and connect with nature.

Try geocaching (The original scavenger hunt!)

Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunting game played using your Smartphone. You use an app to navigate to a specific set of coordinates and then search for a cache (usually a small container) hidden at that location. Inside the cache, there is usually a logbook to sign and sometimes trinkets or toys left behind by other players. This micro adventure is quite addictive, and can be done anywhere. It’s a great way to explore new areas and there is a whole community of geocachers out there.
